Sabbatical: How to Ask for a Longer Break from Work – and How to Prepare for It

The idea of taking a longer break from work can feel both exciting and a little intimidating. Many of us think about it, yet only a few actually take the step. How do you ask your employer for a sabbatical? And what should you prepare in advance so the experience truly benefits you?

A sabbatical – a longer break from work. Many of us are drawn to the idea, yet only a few actually allow themselves to take one. How do you ask your boss for time off? And what should you prepare in advance?

A creative break can be a chance to recharge your energy for both personal and professional growth. It helps prevent burnout and creates space for travelling, learning, or simply taking better care of yourself and your loved ones.

What is a sabbatical

A sabbatical (or creative leave) is a longer break from work that allows you to spend your time on activities of your choice – whether that is learning, working on your own project, or travelling.

In most cases, it is unpaid leave lasting several months up to a year. In some countries, such as Germany, the concept is already quite common. During the preparation period, the employer withholds part of the employee’s salary and then pays it out during the sabbatical itself.

Taking a sabbatical can have many positive effects: better health, renewed energy, fresh inspiration, a stronger sense of purpose, or the opportunity to discover new paths. Despite these benefits, sabbaticals are still relatively rare in the Czech Republic. Employees often worry about their position in the company, the loss of income, or simply stepping into the unknown.

Sabbatical at work

How do you ask for a sabbatical at work, how can you prepare for it well, and how do you return smoothly afterwards?

That is exactly the topic of my article Have you already chosen your creative break?, which I wrote for the summer special edition of the business newspaper Hospodářské noviny (available in Czech only).

If you still have unanswered questions after reading it – or if new ones come up – and you would like to explore the topic in more depth, feel free to get in touch or book a consultation. I will gladly go through your thoughts and concerns with you and help clarify many of the uncertainties.
